Artist Statement
For this open ended piece I want to construct a visual that represents feeling. To be exact, what it feels like to suffer from panic attacks. Feelings are hard to describe with language, imagery, and sound so I would like to take on the challenge of creating an image that describes that feeling.
This very interesting might want to do some research on what make panic attack start and how they are processed through the body. You might find yourself working with the brain also with this work. Cause it what making these fight or flight respond happen within the body. Making exaggeration of certain part within this place can help you give the feeling of the pressure and feeling that one goes through these panic attacks.
ReplyDeleteThe burst of red color in the first image definitely gives the idea of panic/distress. I'd say roll with that, and use bold colors to show the impact and emotion of panic. I feel like an image like this might benefit from being chaotic, and difficult to understand what is happening in the image. Perhaps go with an abstract approach to the image? Just a thought. In the end, what's important is conveying your interpretation of that feeling.
ReplyDeleteIf you want to go at this from more of a medical stand point rather than a abstract way I would defiantly research heavily into what exactly occurs with the body when it goes through these things. Its a awesome topic, but make sure you hone in on a specific goal or else it might get lost.
ReplyDeleteI think you could do sort of a combination of very realistic, anatomical diagrams of the lungs and heart to show regular function and then add bursts of color and bold abstracted shapes and strokes on top to show the ifference when you have a panic attack. very interesting idea, I think it'll be really cool
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great concept, and can't wait to see how you represent it visually.
ReplyDeleteI think the lungs and the heart are a great way to portray the feeling of a panic attack. Additionally, you could include the ribcage as a sort of confining element. When I think about panic attacks, I think about everything feeling super tight in my chest, like my lungs are being crushed and can't get enough air. I think the rib cage could help portray that.
I really like your concept, I like the red in the lungs to portray panic but I feel as if it should be more wild, lots of colors and stuff going on the page
ReplyDeleteI really like this concept. I think this is an unique way of showing feelings, I've never thought about it like that. I'm excited to see where this takes you!
ReplyDeleteI REALLY love this concept. You should check out this link. It has panic attack illustrations. Some are kind of abstract, too, but they really do the job and get the message across. And I agree about the lungs picture. Red is a good way to go.

This idea is great and I feel like rash colors will really make this piece pop. I like the concept of "feeling" and you've expressed that very well through your last projects. I'm excited to see how your composition works out too!
ReplyDeleteI am really looking forward to see how you tackle this problem.
ReplyDeleteYou can play with transparency and shifting of the image to create a somehow double vision effect. I talked a bit about it at Cole's blog, and discovered it by accident when working on my project 4. When you create trans parent layers and start shifting them in various directions, your brain refuses to fully register the whole piece. It creates an effect similar to this: http://www.coolopticalillusions.com/crazy/images/drunk.jpg (sorry, it seems I can't link in comments) Panic attacks are nothing pleasant and looking at a representation of one should't feel like everything's ok.
I think using anatomical charts is a great idea, as it automatically connects us with medical issues.
This is an interesting concept for sure! Like others have stated, definitely look into the physical effects that panic attacks can cause. You may also be interested in looking up how individuals who have had the attacks verbally describe them. Sometimes others try to describe how it feels to let others know. Overall, I am excited to see how the concept will develop.
